The History Behind the Lanterman Act

The California Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act, commonly known as the Lanterman Act, was established in 1969 to protect the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities have the same legal rights and responsibilities guaranteed to all individuals under the United States Constitution and California law.

The Lanterman Act shifted care away from institutional settings and emphasized community-based services that support independence, inclusion, and personal choice. It created California’s regional center system, which helps coordinate services and supports for eligible individuals and their families.

Today, the principles of the Lanterman Act continue to guide supportive living programs by promoting person-centered care, self advocacy, and equal opportunities for individuals to live fulfilling lives within their communities.
